iKat: New Augmented Reality Pet

Posted on March, 10 at 9:56 pm

There’s something about the idea of an augmented reality pet — and a markerless one, too — that will make the heart of every true geek skip a beat. The idea is not entirely new, but it’s still amazing to see a virtual creature hopping around on a real-life surface, seen through your mobile phone’s camera.

iKat was created by a company called Zenitum, using their D-Track engine. The virtual pet is markerless, which means you don’t need a marker or an image target to make it work; the app recognizes the space seen through the camera lens and adapts to it. See a demo of the app (which is in prototype stage at this point) below.

Zenitum’s Depth Tracker (D-Track) technology makes it possible to do this without a marker. It’s quite fascinating, as you can see in the video below: The app analyzes the surface behind the phone and creates a virtual grid in the 3D space in a matter of seconds. Then, you can unleash your virtual pet to scurry around it. Currently, the app doesn’t seem to do much, but we can’t wait to see this technology develop into a full-fledged app.

First Microsoft for Android

Posted on March, 8 at 11:46 pm

The Internet is full of news about the first application that Microsoft posted in Android Market. I decided to check out what is a Microsoft Tag reader. What was a surprise when I discovered that the program is not working?

: Retrieval code formats, I am willing to tell you about the program.

So, Microsoft Tag Reader reads not well-known bar codes (QR code), and codes of your own. On the Internet I such codes not met. But the Tag Reader got acquainted with the site Microsoft Tag where you can create your own “Taghi” generate graphical code if you want them to share with someone.

1

1

To generate your own graphical code, you should go on a special site Microsoft – here (http://tag.microsoft.com/)

3

By creating an account, you will have the opportunity to make a new tag.

4

Tag can be formatted as links (URLs), plain text (Free text), vCard, and the latest version, you can enter the telephone number tag (Dialer).

Let’s start with the URL.

When you create a tag you must enter a name, type, description, appoint the date for the beginning and end of life Tag, and finally the link.

5

Creating the entry site, it is recorded in the generic list, to the right there is a button for the data interrogation programming code by clicking on it, we need to do some tweaking. Select the format of the picture: pdf, WMF, JPEG, PNG, gif, or TIFF. You set the size of future pictures. Plus select format clip art-code: just code, the code with a signature and more.

6

Software interface is very simple: displays the corners of the frame in which the idea we need to “grab” bar-code. Acquire, you once again to ask permission to go to the Internet and then will read that was encrypted in code.

In general the program turned out to be quite good, but why, in principle, it was doing something that has already been created – not understandable. I think the program and remembered as “the first but useless by more than half”.
